Re: Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, Ogden, UT 9/19

I certainly hope you will be able to go! I saw them a year and a half ago (along with Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas, and Bruce Molsky) and they are AMAZING. I dragged my dad along to the show...he really wasn't in the mood to go, but afterwards he kept saying what a great show it was and how glad he...

If I wasn't spending $120 on a bus ticket to NYC to see Cara Dillon in a few weeks, that Gen set would be awfully tempting.

Re: Julie Fowlis on Fonn mo Bheatha

   When I got my tattoo, another tattoo artist was talking about a client she had whose sister had adopted a little boy from Korea. The lady wanted the Korean symbol for "aunt" tattooed on her...much later she found out that the symbol actually meant "man!" LOL...l...

Re: Julie Fowlis on Fonn mo Bheatha

The ones that really get me are the people who post "The tattoo appointment is in one hour! Hurry...I need this translation quickly!" I think a lot of folks (a scary number of people, really) honestly believe that languages are just codes for one another...that all you have to do is get a...

Re: Julie Fowlis on Fonn mo Bheatha

Ah yes, I do love a good tattoo-gone-wrong story!!! Heard a few when I got mine 2 years ago. I wasn't foolish enough to go with anything trendy like that, I just got one of a fiddle (yes, I'm a whistler now, but my all-time favorite instrument - to listen to, at least! - is the fiddle) with the note...

Re: On whistle brands and all that

Im sure a lot of us here wont be session players , its just a fun hobby. Amen to that! I'm a hobby player all the way...pretty much the only person who's heard me play is my dad, and even that took a lot of poking and prodding on his part! I play for my own enjoyment and satisfaction...sometimes le...

Re: On whistle brands and all that

My carbon fiber whistles, for example, have a very breathy, non-traditional tin whistle sound...they're nice for slow airs and such, but not the sound I'd generally want on a traditional Irish reel. Wait, are you saying that slow airs aren't traditional? I'd say that the whole business of buying di...

Re: On whistle brands and all that

Isn't switching too many whistles just an excuse for not that good abilities, while energy would be better spent on practising, rather than buying? I'm still a bit of a whistle newbie, and a very casual one at that, but I'd absolutely disagree with that. I mean really, how much time does one spend ...

Re: Julie Fowlis on Fonn mo Bheatha

Now THERE is something I haven't thought of...a Gaelic tattoo. Not that I know for sure my ancestors spoke Gaelic, but with a name like MacPhail, I'm guessing they did at some point.

Re: Julie Fowlis on Fonn mo Bheatha

Scottish Gaelic. Sorry for the confusion, my understanding of it is that "Irish Gaelic" is generally just called "Irish" and "Scottish Gaelic" is usually referred to as "Gaelic."

Re: Singing in Irish...for beginners

Very cool! I haven't tried my hand at any Irish yet, but I have learned a few Gaelic songs by listening to Julie Fowlis' CDs and (trying to) follow the lyrics in the album liner notes. Most of it I've picked up by ear because I really don't have a strong enough grasp of Gaelic pronounciation to look...

Julie Fowlis on Fonn mo Bheatha

This episode of Fonn mo Beatha, from BBC Alba, was just recently uploaded to YouTube. I thought some of you might be interested in it, though I'm not sure if it belongs here or in the C&F Poststructural Pub. Anyways, Julie is interviewed by Cathy Ann MacPhee, and it's all in Gaelic (with English...
