Re: Swannanoa Celtic Week (how many classes should one take?)

Hi Jeff, I've been to Swannanoa several times, and to the Celtlc week twice. Here's my take: 1. You just never know what kind of instructor you'll get. They are all wonderful musicians and wonderful folks; that doesn't mean they're all teachers. That's not a dig in any respect; just the way it is. 2...

Tina Eck and Lilt

Thanks to Pandora, I've come across what I think is a wonderful combo: Lilt. They are a US-based duo of flute/bouzouki. The Celtic flute player, Tina Eck, is just my style, though I'm not exactly sure what that style is. I think it's "East Galway." I very much like simple/not over-ornament...

Can't find a prior thread on breathing

I did search. There was a thread on a good book about how to breath when playing Celtic flute. Came out in the past few years. Ring any bells? Thank you.

Re: Stand for our dear Irish flutes - searching...

[Thread revival. - Mod.] I thought I'd share what I came up with. I have several guitar stands; one is pictured. I removed the lower "shelf," which allows the upright support to lower right to the floor, which makes it low enough for my flutes to lean against. These pictures are on a carp...

Re: What are your favourite slip jigs?

Maki's link to thesession list of 41 slip jigs is great. Here's one I enjoy: Promenade, which Kevin Burke and Micheal O'Domhnaill did on their CD of that name: http://youtu.be/J7XzqjndH-Q

I too have just discovered Steph Geremia's "The Open Road" and think it's lovely. I'd also add to this list Jérôme Palac'hig's CD "Maudy's Hut." Very nice flute CD.

Accidental discovery - playing flute with headphones on

I'm curious whether this old news to folks. I happened to be listnening to music with an-old style set of headphones -- the kind that cover the entire ears. After a tune, I happened to pick up my flute to play a bit. I happened to forget that I had my headphones on. WOW! The sound of the flute was v...

Now that I have a keyed flute, any need for the keyless

For the past 3 years I have had a keyless Forbes delrin D flute, which I really enjoyed. It works fine for Celtic, which is why I bought it. B/c I play other genres that require accidentals, I’ve recently acquired a Copley D delrin flute, 8-keyed. I like the sound of the Copley much better. So my qu...

Is it bad to leave my flute "uncorked"?

My Forbes delrin flute has no cork on the joints; I leave "assembled" on my desk all the time. Now I have a Copley delrin, and there's cork on the joint. I'm ignorant; is it OK to leave my flute assembled all the time, for easy access? Or should I take it apart regularly so the cork does n...

Embouchure Q on going from D flute to C flute

I've had a keyless D Forbes delrin; just received a keyless C Dave Copley delrin. Very sweet sound. I'm finding the breath/embouchure I use for the D doesn't work for the C. Since I've had it all of 2 days, I figure there's a learning curve. Is that right? I'm ignorant (been playing 2 years). Does a...

Saxophone players: does sax hurt flute embouchure

Curious if there are any sax players out there. I've started and learned quite quickly -- for me -- that playing sax makes my flute emoubouchre sux. It'll come back after 5-10 minutes, and playing whistle accelerates it. I found that fascinating and wonder if there are any others out there who can s...

Re: Question on developing breathing endurance

Thank you very much, Rob and others. Yes "breathing endurance" in the subject line was a bit imprecise. This has been very helpful. The James Galway video prompted an "aha!" moment. I've always thought that the best embouchure was the tightest, but as Sir James suggests, a "...

Question on developing breathing endurance

Let’s say I’m playing a lengthy medley on flute at a session. I find that after several minutes on flute, my sound “deteriorates.” It’s not lack of breath, but it’s lack of something. If I then switch quickly to whistle for a minute and then switch back, the flute sound is fine again. To me that sug...
