Re: Tin Whistle too loud

You could buy yourself a quantity of disposable ear plugs. The sort bikers wear.

You then have two choices.

1. Persuade the wife to wear them so she can't hear the whistle so loud.

2. Wear them yourself so you can't hear the wife complaining.

Re: Professionals choice, for Performance, movie tracks, stage..

I was having a ferret around on Tony Hinnigan's site the other day. Although he favours his Abell for recording and raves about the Oz he says that when he is asked to attend a recording he takes a large bag full of whistles and flutes and lets the director choose the sound quality he is looking for...

Re: Beginning Whistler

Hi Mark, "thumb-mash tweak" Please explain a bit more or point me to the words and pictures. On the original topic of the thread I've been through this myself recently and settled on a Dixon Trad. I also have a Dixon DX001 One Piece Polymer which has very similar air requirements and an al...

Re: How long to get any good

Isn't the Internet a small world! Hotblack, I think that someone else recommended that book in another thread. I in fact bought "The Complete Irish Tinwhistle Tutor" by LE McCullough. I think this may be like throwing a dart at treble 20 and hitting treble 12. Very good but not quite what ...

Re: How long to get any good

There's some brilliant advice in this thread! Some surprising stuff too. In my short (just over a month) experience of the whistle I'd say it is a great instrument to get started on and after that the sky is the limit. I'm up for being patient, doing much practice and enjoying the journey and one da...

Re: How long to get any good

Thanks for all of the valuable insights. I've always been in awe of musicians. What a fantastic gift! Now I want some of that for myself and a month learning the whistle has given me the belief that one day I will be "good enough". By that I mean good enough for me. Along with learning a f...

Re: How long to get any good

I was thinking that's more like it 6 months, 50 tunes, cuts and taps and then I read!
It helps that I've played sax and clarinet for more than forty years.
Ah well back to my ten year plan ;)

How long to get any good

On Gregory Mahan's web site (in the FAQ section) http://www.tinwhistler.com/faq.aspx he says: How long does it take to "get good" at the whistle Well, that depends on what your definition of "Get good" is. It took me 3 years before I felt comfortable with the whistle. It took me ...

Beginners whistle

Hi, I thought I would post something from a beginners point of view about whistle choice. Some of you might know that I've been belly aching about this in the thread "Does a Burke D really sound like this". I've come to the conclusion that the actual choice of whistle doesn't matter a jot....

Re: Rose vs. Abell

Charlie,

So am I right to think that what you are saying is that a Rose D sounds exactly like a soprano recorder?

Cheers

HS

PS I probably shouldn't join in as I don't have a clue what I'm talking about but I just thought that many folks here might not see sounding like a recorder as a positive.

Re: Does a Burke D really sound like this

The subtleties of breath control are truly remarkable. The received wisdom is that the tin whistle is one of the easiest instruments to learn. I wonder if that should be easiest to learn how to tongue out Mary Had a Little Lamb but far from easiest to learn how to get the best from it. Mary Bergin's...

Re: Does a Burke D really sound like this

I am reminded of a childhood story book (beautifully illustrated with B&W photos), where a young boy frustrated with his violin puts it in the garbage. An old man walks by, picks it up and begins playing beautiful music. Boy wants violin back. Point taken but I agree with RDC about not having t...

Re: Does a Burke D really sound like this

To take this thread further off on a tangent.

Is the whistle Pat Tierney is playing on this a Susato Kildare?

Re: Does a Burke D really sound like this

Thanks to every one who has contributed to this thread. I guess there's a few schools of thought on getting a pro whistle. 1. Wait till you can play like a pro then get one. 2. Buy one early it will inspire you to play better. 3. Don't waste your money you'll become disillusioned and give up in a fe...

Re: Does a Burke D really sound like this

The reason I was asking is because if that is what a Burke D can sound like, I need to get one and learn how to make it sound like that. If you compare it with the Abell that James Gallway is playing here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZIDzoTAh8I You may see what I mean, I know it's all a matter o...
