Re: Shoulder surgery

Jon -that's a tough break. Our best wishes for a complete recovery. Go easy on yourself, I think these things just take the time they take. My wife just missed the Flute Meet so she could have spinal surgery, we have some appreciation for what you are going through.

Re: Low D for small hands?

Nomi - I was just buying my own Onyx low D this morning and realized that WD Sweet makes a sideblowing adapter. It's not a flute head but an end cap. Might bring the whistle around to the side where you could reach better with the bottom hand. http://wdsweetflutes.com/onyx.php We used to live on the...

Re: Marcus Hernon's sound

I wonder if that video is from Feenish island "Marcus traces his music back to his Granduncle, Peaitín Connelly (Peaitín Pháraic Mháirtín, as he was known locally), in Feenish Island, who used to play the melodeon, a small type of accordion with one row of buttons. Feenish is a small island off...

Re: Marcus Hernon's sound

Just maybe when playing a composition of your own you are given a sprinkle of magic that takes your playing just a bit farther. Reward for your contribution to the music. When I listen to the invisible corncake on wooden flute obsession one (same as the video Jon C linked to) I can slip into disbeli...

Marcus Hernon's sound

Wondering if anyone can share some insights or observations on what contributes to the sound Marcus Hernon has. I don't have the flute ear to break it down but when I grow up as a flute player thats the direction I'd like to go. Just love listening to him play. On the youtube videos it looks like th...

Re: Music prayer...

Years ago during the evening lecture at the Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin shared with us an old Irish Proverb, "Is deartháir don pháidir an port' - 'The tune is a brother to the prayer'.

Beautifully represents my relationship with the music

I only knew that off the top of my head because I had to rename the mp3 files once I realized I made the same mistake.

Re: Review: Conal O'Grada's "An Fheadog Mhor" Irish Flute Tutor

Crooked - I dont have the book in front of me but I'm pretty sure that tracks ~30-39 are Conal going through tunes he has listed in Appendix 2. ~40-47 are the guest musicians he covers.

Re: Who makes a Rudall style flute in Delrin

I bought a Garry Somers Delrin medium hole Rudall over the holidays and I love it. The feel is solid, the finish is a silky smooth matte, the tuning slide is well done, and the rings give it a traditional look I prefer. The material is warm to the touch they have a C foot that gives them a long lean...
