Re: Cutting practice.

That's funny. I was just thinking that I am not tonguing enough. I play most of the tunes I am learning without tonguing at all, except after breaths. I am just now trying to put in cuts and hits with notes that are of different pitches. I'll try throwing in some tongue for good measure too :D

Re: 2,000 yr old whistle or flute wall painting in Petra Jordan

It looks like the embouchure is 1/3 of the way down the shaft. See the little end of the flute extending past the head? That struck me as odd. Or perhaps the painter was not terribly familiar with flute construction.

Re: Can anyone identify this fragment

Thanks for posting the ABC for Ath Cheim an Fhia. I'll be putting that into my songbook :D

Re: My DIY whistles

Ohh, pretty! I never thought of putting a bend in it like a sax. That's a great idea! I finally got my first non-DIY whistle, and I really like it. I don't think I'll be making any more out of PVC unless the neighborhood kids want to. I wounder if adding a small bell to the end of the shaft would im...

Re: My DIY whistles

I assure you, the instrument has a lot to do with the sound when you'r using a sax that's been beaten up by high-schoolers for the last 20 years :D The only baris I played were owned by my school. Same for the bassoon and contra-altos. I only owned my alto and tenor saxes. Ah, fond memories. Anyhoo,...

Re: FS: Culling the herd...

Oh wow! I must admit I've never shipped anything internationally.

@ahogrelius: I'll PM you an offer for some of the Generations.

Re: FS: Culling the herd...

I would be interested in a Generation D as my music store does not carry them. The international shipping concerns me though. Any idea how much it would be to ship to the states? I'd rather not pay $40 in shipping for a $15 whistle :D

Re: My DIY whistles

I found your blog post yesterday and really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing! I too played the contra-alto, bassoon and bari. I've been wanting to try my hand at making a low D or bass G whistle, but my soprano D's don't sound very good above low A. Until I get that figured out I don't really want to ...

Re: Best D under $100

I know we've gotten slightly off the OP's topic of wanting to find another whistle, but this conversation has been extremely valuable to me, and I think it really speaks to the core question. My first whistle (that I didn't make from PVC) should be coming into the local music shop today along with a...

Re: A Challenge for the Newbies & Lurkers

I love playing for children that get all excited. Yea, it was very fun. That's something I love about playing outside. There are several other two to six year olds that live in our townhouse square. They have all been very interested and excited to see the construction of the whistles and have enjo...

Re: A Challenge for the Newbies & Lurkers

Wow, what a great thread! 1. I played in the band for five years in school, and played every reeded instrument we had arrangements for. I have the most experience with the saxophone, and come from a Jazz background. I made my first two whistles out of PVC. They sound OK up to the low B, at which poi...

Re: New Whistler Looking for Guidance on Tunes

Thank you for those links Walri. That has been helpful! I have been looking for song books and found this: Ireland's Best Tin Whistle Tunes which contains 110 tunes sorted by relative difficulty. I'll have to pick up a copy sometime to satisfy my morals, but in the mean time I am looking up the song...

New Whistler Looking for Guidance on Tunes

Hi all! I have not played music in over ten years. I picked up the Tin Whistle last weekend and have been having a blast! I have been noodling around with American folk tunes, sea shanties and some big-band era jazz. Just today I started following along with Ryan Duns' series on You Tube and playing...
