Re: hornpipes...

Oh, very nice, Steve. So now, since I've always been curious about these 3/2 hornpipes, can someone point me to a few good recorded examples of them being played properly? Lads of Alnwick is a 3/2 hornpipe isn't it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiuMwskhsGk As is Dance to your Daddy I believe. You...

Not being tuneable might be an issue if you're intending to play with others.
Good point.

Hey, doesn't the Dixon Trad come in E? Pretty sure it does.

Re: Looking for Irish music in whistle tab

I'm very new to the tin whistle, and I'm looking for Irish tunes to play on mine in D (usually play rhythm guitar with a seisun near Chicago). The Tin Whistle Fingering Research center looked promising, but the link to their music page seems to be broken. Did find the "Buzzing Whistle Jig"...

Re: Exploring the Negative Generation Urban Legend

The G on that whistle (actual G, bottom 2 holes uncovered) is noticeably flat, blow hard as you like you can't bring it into tune. This raises the question, what do you mean by "noticeably flat"? A perfect third is 14 cents flat from an equal tempered third. If you're used to equal temper...

Re: Exploring the Negative Generation Urban Legend

I don't care much for 'analysing' soundclips, it is very hard to tell between a player who doesn't blow well and a whistle that's genuinely out of tune. My impression, from listening to the Eb clip, is that it's pretty much a case of the former. True, but maybe there's merit in comparing the Eb vs ...

Re: Correcting the Negative Generation Urban Legend

Well, it's perfectly possible you have an Eb stinker. No way to know unless you ... *ahem* ... take Dale up on his offer. But it's possible your expectations are a mismatch to the whistle. Your mention "mellow". It's not a word I associate with Gens, or necessarily want to associate with ...

Re: Correcting the Negative Generation Urban Legend

I've got a bad Generation, what can I say. It's an Eb. I managed to take it from completely unplayable (squeaks and squawks, bad in the first octave, unbearable in the second) to playable but harsh with some sandpaper. It lives on a shelf and doesn't get played, although in the interests of fairness...

Re: are clares more reliable than generations?

The Clare's aren't bad - I keep a nickel D by my bedside in case I feel the need to play before I get up in the morning and a brass 2-piece whistle in my handbag for whistle emergencies. (Sad I know!) That said, for £15 you can get a Dixon Trad and it'll be a fantastic easy-playing whistle for a beg...

Re: Newbie tring hard and needs advice

Your articulation will sound much cleaner if you learn to "tongue" - that is, begin a note by saying "ta" or "tuh", with the tongue lightly touching your upper palate just behind your top teeth. Once you've learned to do that, yes your articulation will sound cleaner a...

Re: "Breaking In" New Tin Whistle

I think most of us have a similar experience; sooner or later something just clicks into place with regard the breath control, and we suddenly find we can do all sorts of things that previously we found difficult. Whistles (especially cheap whistles) that we thought were rubbish all of a sudden star...

Re: New here and need some advice

Yeah I did add a little reverb, that was before I really listened to a lot of peoples recordings. I did find that some people add too much reverb. I'll play about with recording styles and see what sounds good or bad I'll keep in mind with the reverb as it can be good or bad depending on how its us...

Re: New here and need some advice

Dave, have you processed the audio on some of those videos to add reverb? You maybe need to dial it back a few notches, it's muddying the tone of your playing, and those whistles should sound nice enough without it.

Re: Learning ornamentation...

The only thing I would add is that you actually don't have to use cuts, rolls and so forth to articulate your notes; there's nothing actually wrong with mostly using tonguing. Most people seem to eventually settle down to a balance that suits them well. There's certainly nothing wrong with alternati...
