I have had an iRiver iHP-120 for about a year now. It's great to keep all my CDs and recorded tunes on, and just plug it into my computer and have it act as a hard disk. There is, however, a big downside: the response time to start it recording is very poor. About 10 seconds of "HD Check... ple...

Yeah, go to the Green Briar in Brighton tonight or any Monday night, slow session starts at 7:00, fast session at 9:00.

Thanks for the advice all. I did get some sweet almond oil, and have let the flute drink some. Please give us a review or your impressions of the flute, anyhow, when you have them. Well, having only two years with Irish flutes, and only a Seery and a Dixon to compare with, I'm not going to be able t...

Breaking in the new flute

I've finally received my new Pratten-style Olwell keyless blackwood flute, with half-lined (French style) tuning slide, after a long year's wait. But he states that I shouldn't play it for more than an hour a day for the first month... pretty painful given a certain amount of excitement and even obs...

I'll lobby on this list too (already posted on IRTRAD list) for Boston's Shannon Heaton. (You can hear some clips at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/msheaton. She is also part of the group Siúcra (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/siucra)).

When I was pretty young, I heard some flute music that my parents had on a record player late at night. I thought it was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard, and from that day on I wanted to play the flute. But I never had much oppurtunity, and thus am only really trying to learn how to play n...

I suggest you place the cork in the 'standard' position and find what that means for your embouchure, following Rama's advice. Yep, that's what I've done. I can get the registers in tune, though I really have to work at it. Thanks for all the good advice! These Irish flutes are tricky little devils...

Sboag - I'd place money that if your teacher thinks it's OK, it's probably OK. You're probably right. I did find it interesting that Caite's description was exactly what I've been going through, on the same make of flute. These kind of discussions are awfully hard to have over the distance. If we w...

You should see Terry McGee's excellent article at http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/Stopper.html. As you move the cork away from the embouchure hole, the upper register pitch should flatten some, without greatly effecting the low register pitch. I bought a second-hand Seery, and I've always found the high...

Rolls in slides

I seem to remember some rule about using rolls in slides... like don't use 'em. Am I remembering correctly? (And, yes, it's understood that every rule is meant to be broken... just looking for guidelines). Also, if anyone has handy a nice version of the Kaiser (Going To The Well For Water) on flute....

It was indeed a wonderful and memorable week, and a great time for me who has never been at this sort of festival and workshops before. I thought it was amazing just to be able to listen to all the different flute styles, and playing abilties. And to be able to learn from the likes of McGrattan, Raf...

Concern about jig studies in Larsen book

I've been doing a bit of playing along with Larsen's studies, and I'm concerned about the studies that are based on jigs. Larsen plays these absolutely evenly, both the rolls and melody notes. But Jigs aren't supposed to be played that way (see http://www.rogermillington.com/siamsa/brosteve/tricky.h...

If you're in the Boston area, they'll be playing at the Boston Celtic Music Festival (BCMFest) next week, Jan 9 & 10, as well a lot of other really great Boston area ITM musicians. See www.BCMFest.com.

I don't think there's any controversy that tonging, *when correctly used*, is fine and even desirable as an articulation for whistles. More controversial is tonging with the flute (see http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=14690&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 ). Note that Grey Lars...
