Re: Whistle making help needed
I considered a drill press, but I do not like the fact that with a drill press I need to move the table with the work piece up or down when changing to different size drill bits. I like the drill table and work piece at a constant height, bolted down to my work table, so I can do the job sitting do...

Re: Whistle making help needed
aren't consistent with the fipples. Yep. I'm working on another project at the moment but when I come back to whistles I plan on making a jig so that I can consistently drill out the window at the angle I want. When I cut the window by hand, I inevitably end up making it shallower or wider than I w...

Re: Whistle making help needed
"HBflutomat has been spot on for length" I'd say was rather fortunate for you! I would not like to rely on the calculated full length when creating a one-piece prototype whistle , as even small changes in the whistle's window dimensions will seriously flatten or sharpen the overall tuning...

Re: Whistle making help needed
I've built 4 whistles, only one turned out well enough to play (my inexperience, no fault of the calculators, one (4th) was an experiment in tiny whistles), but HBflutomat has been spot on for length. On the good one (my 3rd), the hole size/spacing was very close. At first the holes were a little un...

Re: Whistle making help needed
Welcome to the wonderful world of whistle making, Wormil! Well I was definitely encouraged after my modest success with a C whistle. The calculator got me very close. I started by drilling each hole two bit sizes small then worked my way up. On most of the holes, I was able to use a bit size smalle...

Re: Whistle making help needed
Goofing around in the shop tonight I made a 6" whistle just to see if it would work. I wasn't aiming for any particular key and just picked the length by eye. It's a very shrill D around 1170Hz if my tuner app is correct. I then drilled 2 holes using the percentages given in the rubberband vide...

Re: Whistle making help needed
Success! (mostly) The C whistle plays okay though there is still a little fine tuning with needle files necessary as several holes are just a hair flat. The whistle is much breathier after drilling the holes and the upper register on the E,F,G & A holes is difficult and unstable. It's not very l...

Re: Whistle making help needed
Thanks to everyone for the advice. I haven't drilled the holes yet on the C whistle, I think I'm a little nervous. But the whistle blows well. Playing around with it as-is, I can hit the higher and lower octave with little effort. After drilling, hopefully I can say the same. After building an Aeoli...

Re: Whistle making help needed
Oh, and if you get a chance, you might try a slightly different pipe. I haven't tried this for high whistles, only with low whistles, but I found, at the hardware store, some thin-walled PVC pipe (thinner than CPVC) that has the same O.D. as the schedule 40 pipe. This also means a larger I.D., but ...

Re: Whistle making help needed
Okay, I worked and worked on the Eb whistle but it's a lost cause. I've shaped and reshaped the blade and it's still hard to blow. I can't get the holes large enough to hit the right notes so they must not be in the right places. Maybe after I have more experience I'll come back and revisit it. I mo...

I tried your chapstick idea and it worked great.

I read conflicting posts on that, some had said it was better not sharp.MeMyselfandI wrote:Why did you do that? In my experience, it sounds better when the labium sharp.

Re: Whistle making help needed
Thanks that might help explain things then. How far into the tube do you drill out the pipe? If you stop before the bottom of the labium then the windway will be higher than the bottom on the labium edge. Of course you could then undercut the labium to bring the edge up but you might then enlarge t...

Re: Whistle making help needed
Pics, I've been experimenting with different plugs (round and flattened) and head shapes. I haven't done any final trimming on the mouthpieces because I wanted to experiment a bit before committing : http://i.imgur.com/39zeCl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/hKEIkl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Bz2dxl.jpg The bottom...

Whistle making help needed
I like to make musical instruments so I decided to make a penny whistle. I used TWCalc because I don't have any metric bits and all the plans I found were metric. HB Flutomat was the algorithm I used and my whistle holes are coming out at least 2 sizes too small. In other words, a 5/32" (3.97mm...
