Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

Luckily, our group has a giant umbrella for musicians to stand under if the weather gets too nasty.

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

Well, some band members and I bought a consort of kelhorns, so we'll at least get some buzz AND history going for some of our songs.

Pretty sure I'm going to pick up the sweetheart 4 key next paycheck. Everything seems to have sorted themselves out.

Thanks, everyone, for your help!

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

If you're trying to strip down to a bare minimum of keys, 4 will get you full chromatic I've pretty much decided that's probably the best option for my needs. Oh? My impression was that they were popular instruments in the Renaissance and, for military use, especially outdoors. Yes! I simply meant ...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

Yes, I am quite aware that the flute was not a popular instrument of the time, especially in an outdoor ensemble. Unfortunately, unless I'd like to roll around a keyboard, its the only instrument I know how to play, and to the uninitiated, a flute looks correct. Most of my requirements are based on ...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

Thanks for all the input! I have had no problems with the volume of my folk flute at all, but I don't know how that compares to other instruments. I know my aestetics are making my search more difficult, but that is for my enjoyment of the instrument not necessarily the patrons of the faire. My budg...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

http://www.allmusicalinstruments.net/items/995728/item995728store.html#item Does that look legitimate? I've never bought an antique instrument, so I have no experience with it. I am however friends with two instrument repair people, so replacing pads wouldn't be an issue I shouldn't think, unless th...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

This is what I play out at the KC Renfest: How relevant! KCRF is actually my faire!! I am liking the sweetheart, but I've heard some people don't like the rosewood. I am partial to boxwood myself, but I think that might be impossible to find in my price range. I like the idea of delrin, but I just ...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

I'm gonna guess the costumes are sewn on a sewing machine with nylon or polyester thread. The fabrics are all natural - wool or cotton maybe? Dyed with natural dyes. Right? Haha, you got me there! Historical in appearance if not execution. http://i1157.photobucket.com/albums/p592/insidiousraven/138...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

Our festival is very fantasy oriented, and not historically accurate at all. I only strive for accuracy as my costume IS historically accurate, and I don't want my instrument to look too out of place. I think a few keys would go unnoticed as you are correct in assuming the guitar and violin are mode...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

As I understand, baroque flutes are generally 1-keyed (at the foot) and use recorder-type cross-fingerings (and half-holes and shadings) for accidentals. They are also relatively quiet for outdoor playing. So if it's keyed accidentals you're looking for, a baroque flute is probably not what you wan...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

Ok, after researching this morning I'm kind of leaning towards a baroque flute.

Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival

So, I feel like I'm looking for a bit of a unicorn flute, and I could really use some suggestions. I play in a renaissance band (me, recorder, violin, drum, guitar) and am looking for a new flute. This flute needs to: * Fit in historically (be or look wooden with minimal silver or accents. Preferabl...
