YEOW!! That thing is amazing!!! I'm going to definitely look into it - I'm thinking something like this would make a great performance stand, especially for someone (like me) who carries a lot of whistles to a gig - no more laying them out on my portable projector table.

You do have to listen to your hands most carefully to discover if it's just going to take getting used to (as any new instrument does), or if there's an issue with your thumbs and you need to accommodate it. In my case, I have a nerve issue in my left thumb that makes it very difficult to hold a whi...

Wow. Was away for the weekend, and just read the news. Wow.

Thank you Bernard for giving all of us who love the low whistle a voice to sing with.

And thank you Colin - the legacy is in good hands.

I've also ordered direct from Stacey. She was great to deal with, and provided me with a lovely bass Bb/C set.

Big Whistle is also great to work with. :-D And the Goldie's. :-D

I'm totally with Paul - the plastic Yamaha tenor is affordable, and they play really nicely. As for half holing, I've found that it's actually easier for me with piper's grip. It might just be my pudgy fingers, but instead of having to move my finger up or down, I've found that if I straighten the f...

There are two low F's in my gig bag - a purple (really really dark blue) Overton and a Chieftain Gold. But my go-to low F is the Overton. :)

CP: Cal's Christmas CD

I know there are some on the board who like to know this sort of thing, so... Vicki and I are proud to announce the release of my 2nd CD, WhistleWonder: The Carols Of Christmas . The CD has 12 cuts, including my version of Pachelbel's Canon (The Kicked-Up Kanon) and fresh arrangements of 11 carols....

This is a caricature from when I worked at His Kids Radio, where my air name was (and is) Captain Cal.

I still have an email someplace from Glenn Schultz, where the first line is, "Arrr, Cap'n!"

You keep a framed picture of Dale Wisely in the hall with the family photos. Are you saying there are people who don't have The Undisputed on their wall? Whoa... I thought it was a universal adornment... You know you're a whistler when you're riding in the car (with your wife driving) with one hand...

I have a number of them. I find they're my "special team" whistle. I grab one when I want a recorder-ish sound for a certain song. (I usually play "Leader Of The Band" on a low Eb Susato) Or, when I need to play a passage in a different key, and don't have time to warm up a metal...

Ezri definitely likes the whistles - especially low ones. She'll come, sit at my feet, and sniff the whistle to see if she can figure out where the sound is coming from. :) Which is only bad when one is playing an Overton Bass A and she prods the whistle with her nose - wham. Hard edge of mouthpiece...

Since I actually own two of these beasties (the purple one on the site, if it's still there, is mine...), allow me to clear up some of the speculation... FYI - The two I have are a Bass D (octave below low D) and a Bass G (G below low D). A440 - they are tuneable, so yes - they can play at standard...

One more thought - although Andrea can sync all day in an arena show as far as I'm concerned. *sigh* I'm sure they play outdoor stages, as well as having some funky wind currents on stage (all the better to move her shining hair about). Rather than having a gust of wind take out half a whistle line...
