whistling and canoeing

Hi all, Hol-Ry! After leading a few training canoe trips for the new guides I've now returned from my first trip out on the water this season with the scouts. My first crew of the summer was all thirteen or fourteen year old boys (plus 2 adult advisors). They canoed/portaged 101 miles in 9 days; pre...

Curiosity killed the clarke

After reading a few threads on how nice Clarkes could be if you just mash the windway down a bit I held out for a good while before I finally tried it on an impulse, and it went well. Then I thought...what happens if I flatten it a little more? It wasn't long before I tried that too. Then it was onl...

I don't intend to play in the canoe; my hands are usually busy with my paddle. That doesn't stop me from singing, but I don't sing while passing fishermen or occupied campsights. I'll of course be considerate of neighbors (and the groups I guide) when we make camp, as are most Scouts.

Don't I know it. I'm at school in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the windiest place I've been short of mountain tops. It helps to have my back to the wind and the top of the Dixon whistle on backwards and kept near my chin.

canoeing whistle and case

I'm going to be in that hypothetical, "If you could take just one whistle with you..." situation a month from now. I'll be guiding Boy Scouts from the Northern Tier High Adventure canoe base into the Quetico Provincial Park in Canada! :D I need to choose a whistle that will stand up to bei...

Whistle and backgammon are my two new hobbies. If I had one with foam cut out for the two dice shaker cups, a Clarke, and a Dixon... what a box of goodies. :)

The Irish Rovers

Today I saw two records by The Irish Rovers. One was Unicorn, and I don't remember the title of the other. They cost $3 each. Anybody heard these? Is there any whistle music on them? Are they perhaps incredibly valuable collectible I should purchase ASAP?

I'm Rich VIII, I am. Rich VIII I am, I am. I got married to the widow next door. She's been married seven times before. And every one was a Rich. She wouldn't have a Willie or a Sam. I'm her eighth old man I'm Rich. Rich the eighth I am.

when to use piper's grip

In a few hours I should have a Shaw whistle in A arriving... should I use the piper's grip or play it like I have played my soprano Ds? In what key do most people begin to change their grip?

coping with a breeze

Hi all, Today was a gorgeous day, so I brought a whistle to campus and played outside between classes. I've played with a Dixon outdoors and the notes I blow most gently for cut out in the wind. So today I tried my tweaked Shaw... reasoning that since I blow harder into it it would stand up to the w...
