Broke Chanter Reed

Just broke my only chanter reed (yes--I was being stupid). Any recommendations on reputable chanter reed makers? I am in central California.

Pibcher Flute?

Our local instrument repair man has an old flute. It is a simple system 10 keyed (I think) with an ivory head joint, lined, with a huge crack. It is imprinted with the name C. Pibcher (NY). Anyone have any info on this maker?

Reed Went Flat

During our hot and dry summers I keep a wet sponge in a baggie in the case to keep the chanter reed playable. This has worked all summer very well. Last night when I attempted to join in our local session, the reed was nearly a quarter tone flat. I tried setting the reed into the chanter further, bu...

Re: Base drone drops a fifth

Problem solved...I moved the bridle (?) down a little--which seemed to fix the problem.

Base drone drops a fifth

We are entering our hot dry summer season and I am having a little problem with the base drone. Periodically, and especially if I let up on the bag pressure, the base drone drops down a fifth (or is it a fourth--not sure). Interesting effect--but not really what I want. Anyone else ever encounter th...

Re: New Day

Sorry Harlow, but I don't know what a "barrel style" drone is.

New Day

I am now in the possession of a new Michael Hubbert half set--thanks Michael. Very lovely to look at. Been working with a budget practice set the past 1.5 years. Tried the Hubbert "out of the box"--what a difference (happy dance). Wife claims it's my midlife sports car. Maybe it is.

Re: Question about a flute

Thanks for the detailed response. There is no maker imprinted on the flute that I could find. It is a lovely sounding flute, and I will pass on your recommendation to the owner.

Question about a flute

Hi All A friend has asked me to look at a flute she inherited from her father, who is German. I have posted images on http://www.flickr.com/photos/48635940@N07/ (I hope this works--never tried posting a picture until now) My questions are 1. Does anyone recognize the maker? 2. The flute has a nice t...

Just received my flute from Irish Marine. It is a very nice flute--and all went according to plan!

Is this a great forum or what.

Hi Bob. Having played Irish fiddle for several decades, I decided to try the Irish flute two years ago at the tender age of 53. Got a Copley-Boegli (6 keyed) from Doc Jones and haven't looked back. It's a great instrument and now it competes with the fiddle for my time. Can't wait for retirement. If...

Hi Steve It sounds like we're at the same place with this thing. Lately I'm coming around to the conclusion that the "white noise effect" is a result of inconsistent embouchure. So I'm now focusing on keeping my embouchure tight throughout the tune. I end up with an aching jaw at the end o...

T1 for G cut?

So, I have been working on my cuts according to Larsen. He recommends using T2 for a G cut. Problem is I have a slight deformity in this finger which makes this difficult (but not impossible). On the fiddle I often "cut" (not the right word, but you get the idea) a third above the note tha...
