I go to a session where we play lots of English music, as well as Irish, Scottish and some Americana. But then we are in England. The tunes aren't more simple - they're just played differently. The rhythms of English dance music can be difficult to get a handle on and we're lucky enough to have some...

I brought a Troubadour zook with built-in preamp off David a couple of months ago and was very impressed with his service which was fast and efficient. David is very honest about the setup and quality of his instruments, which does need a bit of attention. I put new strings (Redwing from The Music R...

Whistle notation
A friend of mine has told me about a system of notation used by Irish trad whistle players as an alternative to written music.
I have never seen an example of this or understand how it works, and my friend has no examples either - can anyone here shed light on this subject?

My whistle smells funny
Is it any coincidence that my Howard low with plastic mouthpiece D and my plastic Dixon high D, which both live in those natty two-part plastic cases both smell a bit funny sometimes? I thought I might melt some holes into the cases at the mouthpiece end to encourage airflow, as it must be the whist...

Thanks for all the replies folks - great advice. I thought it was me rather than the whistle and I think I'm going to stick with it - anything worthwhile takes effort and time and the whistle does seem to be playing in a bit now. I went and bought a plastic Dixon high D to practice with whilst playi...

I tune my zook GDAD and use unison strings - I get mine from Tony 'Sully' Sullivan (www.halshawmusic.co.uk) so just ask for a set but I think mine are 42/32/16/12 but I might be wrong . . .

New Bleazey High D - trouble with the second octave
Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and recently aquired a Bleazey High D in Mopani from Phil. This is a lovely looking whistle - I did some research on wooden whistles before ordering it and settled on the Bleazey as it seemed to get good reviews from many people. However, I got the whistle and, being i...
