Re: Flute ergonomics question

Thanks all for the replies, Grey Larsen's book is still available. Reprints of Quantz's book might be tougher to find? Is that the same Quantz as in Baroque era composer and Flautist? If so, how neat is that to have written something which is still in use for advise three centuries after it was writ...

Re: Flute ergonomics question

As far as holding the flute with the proper posture/grip, I would think there is no difference and a tutor book for any flute would be helpful. The baroque flute though would have different fingering patterns and possibly different embouchure techniques than other Irish/Boehm flutes. My main concern...

Flute ergonomics question

Hello all... I've been happily playing Recorders (alto mostly) and whistles for several years now. From time to time I've really wanted to try a Baroque flute for the chromatic capability, interesting quiet tone and historical accuracy for the Baroque music I like. Every time I seriously consider &q...

Re: Sweetheart Fife question

Thanks all, I was not aware that something about the way a flute is held as opposed to a whistle makes the holes easier to reach on a key by key basis. I just sold a G whistle that, while I could play without the "piper's grip" was pushing the limits of finger stretching for me and in fact...

Re: Sweetheart Fife question

Thanks for the responses. I'v had Bb keyed whistles that were a nice balance between low sounding but yet easy to finger. I thought that a Bb Flute/fife might be similar and a nice way to learn embouchure and holding posture for the 'sideways' world without risking hand problems (which I've had). I ...

Sweetheart Fife question

Hello all, I was browsing on the sweetheart website today and was drawn to a Bb fife. The M-2 model was advertized as having a larger bore in order to sound the first register better than most fifes. I was hoping to tap this board's vast storehouse of knowledge to find out... Is the claim of a stron...

Entire Whistle Collection FS. (SOLD ! )

Greetings All, after happily playing Whistles, Soprano, Alto and Tenor Recorders for the last two years, I've reached the point where trying to keep the various fingerings strait in my head is holding me back. I have decided to sell my entire Whistle collection and concentrate on the Alto Recorder. ...

Re: Condensation and wooden whistles....

They do sell an anti condensation fluid which is actually produced for woodwind instruments such as Recorders. I believe it's called dupenol or something like that. The only wooden airway whistle I have is a Sweetheart Laminate whistle, but that's not the same as a true wooden airway whistle. I woul...

Thank you all very much. And the mental gymnastics go on..... It's taken me so long to save for this purchase that I want to choose wisely. I think it might be wise to try and make the trip to a big city music store. (I live out in the middle of nowhere) Doc and Doug Tipple in an earlier thread had ...

Thanks Jayhawk, I'll take that as a vote for the Sweetheart. I actually happen to like the "baroque sound" . I also do like to play Recorder as well. But the more "colorful" tone of the Irish flute is nice as well (just in a different way) so it's hard to decide based on tone alo...

Can't decide... Aulos, Dixon or Sweetheart

I was hoping to get some more input from the wealth of experience on this board. Right.... now here's the deal... I'd like to start playing flute with a flute that can do 'double duty'. I like both Trad and folk music but also like classical music which needs chromatic capability. Also I really don'...

FS.. Multiple whistles together for cheap! SOLD

Greetings all, I have been trying to save up for a nice Flute and the wife says "you've got too many instruments allready". Well I can't argue with her on that one.... So I have decided to sell several of the instruments which don't get played often enough to warrant keeping. I am extremel...

Hello mika. I agree with the comments above. the type of wood makes less difference to the tone than other factors such as bore size windway shape etc. If you go to the Antique Sound Workshop website, they have a good bit of information about Recorders.

By the way there is indeed a "BlockFlute" or Recorder available in the key of Bb. It is made by Kung, or Kueng in the German spelling. I have two Soprano Kungs in C and they are very nice instruments. Antique Sound Workshop carries them as does Lazar's early instruments. The Bb, or 'Folklo...

Thanks for the replies. I had considered a used Boeme Flute, but I tend to be drawn to simple instruments with long histories to them. Boeme Flutes are just too mechanically complex and "modern" to appeal to me. That's just my own bias I realize. The picture of the Aulos next to the two Ir...
