Re: Advice on using a whistle with a solid lead block on fipple
If all you’re worried about is the part of the block that touches your lip, any sort of insulating film would do the trick during a quick trial run. Taking instruments such as these back ...

Part of the problem is that I don't want to burst anyones ears with the top notes so I tend ... wen I was supposed to be asleep, where you put the beak of the whistle under your lower lip and blow air down across the blade – you only get one octave, but you can hear the melody ...

Re: Delrin flute suggestions for 2024?
The Copley & Boegli delrin flute is my favourite travel waterproof flute too. The intonation is very good although the third octave sounds flat (not many people ... its carcinogenic potential. I guess that's why silver lip plates are handy.

Re: Tipple flute with or without lip plate
I've been in touch with Doug, who's suggesting that the standard version without the lip plate plays well for both beginner and experienced players through 2+ octaves, so I'll defer to ...

Re: Which flute keys are the best keys?
I agree with tstermitz and jayhawk, but I also play fully keyed flutes. I play a lot of music ... to sharpen the second octave C#, which on my flutes is rather flat and not as easy to lip up to pitch as the first octave C#. The D# key I know is mostly useless in Irish music ...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
I generally wear a beard in the winter but not the summer. Like others, I feel that the beard definitely helps the flute from sliding on my lower lip. But I can't stand having a beard in the hot humid mid-Atlantic summer. So I wear a soul patch year ...

Volume Control Ring - Why Doesn't it Exist??
I was idly reading random old discussions on here about kwela-style whistle, when I came across a thread from a few years ago pointing out that some kwela players play with their lips partially covering the fipple to increase the volume of the first octave. Curious to see ...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
I don't have that problem but two possible solutions spring to mind. If you're a guy and don't have one already, maybe grow a beard for a less slippery contact point under your lip? Or at least a soul patch. :D I have a beard, not a very full ...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
For years, I had the same problem your report, especially when nervous. I am a cyclist. Handlebar tape usually comes with double-sided sticky tape underneath to keep the tape from slipping over time. The outer surface is slightly textured to keep sweaty hands from slipping. ...

Tipple flute with or without lip plate
I'm considering ordering a Tipple flute for a backup/no-maintenance flute, but just heard from Doug that he's no longer offering the lip plate option. Has anyone compared the lip-plate 'model' to the one without it? I'm inclined to believe ...

Re: Delrin flute suggestions for 2024?
All the Delrin/Polypenco flutes I've tried were very heavy, much heavier that the wood flutes I've owned. Are there makers who do a "thinned" Delrin flute? I imagine it would need a raised lip-plate, achieving the same blow-hole depth as a wood or thick-walled Delrin ...
