14 - but soon stopped due to domestic pressure (should have bought a D not a G)
28 - a couple of years steady practice, but 20 mins a day gets me not very far.
35 - another burst, reached an impass a bit below session speed. Got mandolin & bodhran
45 - in musical wilderness, almost forgot about trad.
55 - Hey, we have internet, loads of advice and opinions and music on tap, and a routine that gives me an hour so in the house on my own. This time I may actually do it.
56 - Bought a whistle I could play in tune.
57 - Bought a flute but whistle lives on the computer keyboard.

And there does seem to be a peak in the fifth decade of the poll. Damn, I just snuck into that cohort as well - I chose a low whistle in my forties, but didnt do much with it until my very late forties.

I really regret not having musical training or interest from an early age. A musical introduction at school had me interested in playing trumpet - but I couldn't seem to raise the necessary enthusiasm in my parents.

I did started playing with a harmonica ('Blues Harp', 'Gob Iron') at uni. I never got good, but can crank out a steady but unimaginative 'riff' in whatever key is five semitones above the instrument.

Thanks for your responses (though that does NOT mean the poll is closed).

One does not equal two. Not even for very large values of one.

I played Recorder in Elementary School and then to Trumpet through the rest of 5th-12th grade and then played trumpet during my 30's at my congregation. I currently play a Wind Controller.
Around 36, I started making whistles and been doing it throughout the 40's.

Which reminds me, I made some homemade instruments back when I was in 11th and 12th grade. Then it was put away while I went to college and got a job but it came back.
Been making whistles for 11 years now.

I started in 15-16 I think... Inspired by Jem Finer's work of lyrics and playing of Barney McKenna, I thought it would be great to play banjo. I played classical guitar since some 8-9 years of age, but didn't enjoy it that much - after leaving local school of music, I played some irish things on the guitar, but it wasn't as rewarding. So I decided to go for banjo. I had very little many, took me some year or so to get enough money...and then some cun... bad guys just stole my purse - with all that money in it. But I wanted to play something Irish so much :-( And then I saw there were those funny little thingys in the store. I got some pocket money (I was getting something like 6-7 euros a month), so I bought one (Clarke trad) - I loved it, however when I tried Clarke Sweetone, I liked that one much more...and that was a start of my whistling.

Never played anything else because never succeeded in learning anything else because never seriously tried.

Didn't really try seriously this time, but made enough progress without being serious to consider taking it seriously.
