Does anyone know where I can get dimensions for making an Irish flute? Are there any drawings/plans available for something like what M&E or Seery build, or based on historical flutes?
Thanks,
Oreo Phil

So you really want to build your own flute?
Lark in the morning sells plans for four types of early flutes, some of the types are used for Irish Music. $100.

A great site for imformation would be Terry Mcgee's
http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/
You might also check yahoo. There is a discussion group for flute builders.
There are some other books out that are for the amateur, but I can't think of them at the moment. If you do a search here, It might turn something up.

The Lark in the Morning plans do not give any dimensions for the bore, but rather a staight taper. I have heard that the flutes come out all right, but I returned mine. For $100 I didn't think they were worth it.

Jean Francois offers an extensive selection of flute dimensioned drawings (mostly traversos). But he has done the R&R #5047 (basis of M&E R&R). His drawings are sketchs, but are fully dimensioned and are only $35 Canadian dollars.
(I believe his drawing #97 is R&R # 5047.)
Here is a link to Jean's website:

If not, then Jean did the drawing for the
John Dick collection of the Edinburgh University Collection of Musical Instruments and a copy of the drawing is available from them. Here:

Thanks everyone!
Yep, I would like to try to make a flute.
But lack of tools will be a problem.
But I will at least dream as I look at the plans.

Hey Oreo,
Check out Luc Verhoeven's website, here:
http://users.skynet.be/fluiten/how.html
He shows a nice slideshow of the process he uses to make his flutes.
Of course
Lucas should tell you about this site since it is his!
Terry McGee also does this on his website:
http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/making.html

I'm a little shy, you know. What can I say, Terry's plans are excellent. I know because I made them but that's not the reason. These plans are meant to be 'working plans' and not 'museum plans'. In other words, they should provide everything you need to really make a flute instead of just giving dimensions. Up to you to decide if we succeeded.
As to the 'how to build a flute' page on my website : read the disclaimer carefully!
I made it because when I started I wish I would have found something like it but it is not meant to be the bible of flutemaking.
I can tell you that with a drill press and a simple wood lathe you *can* make a flute but it takes some practice and a lot of trials. I think I made about 6 to 8 flutes before I got something that I was satisfied with. So start with cheap woods (maple, olive). My first try was made from a wooden curtain rod !
