Intresting looking set Mike but it raises a couple of questions

1) is it double reeds in the drones as well as the regulators.
2) looks like two regulators and I assume that the long key is on the baritone are they reversed or was it a originally a leftie

Hi John,

No, the drone reeds are the standard cane guills, and the regulator reeds are also standard cane beasties. Chris sent me some photos as he was carrying out the restoration, so I'll dig them out and post them here.

The original set was made in that configuration, but could also be played the other way round.

It looks like the set will be up for grabs by the end of next week. :D

I take it by standard you mean the drones use single split cane reeds and the regulators double reeds ? Recall reading somewhere an experienced pipemaker and historian has stated that you cannot mix different types of reeds in the same airspace so if this set works what is going on or are they separated somehow inside the main stock ? As it is one of yours and you are doing the restoration can you enlighten us here Chris ?

Why when you are now a pipemaker did you not restore the set yourself ?

John,

I asked Chris to bring it up to top playing condition because he made it and has much more experience of renovating sets than I do. I work on new pipes for the most part, and restoring a set would move me out of my comfort zone. If any work was needed on the bores, for example, I do not have the specific reamers for those particular regulators, whereas Chris still does. In the end the regs didn't need anything doing to them apart from new reeds, so the problem never arose.

I don't know where you have been looking for the info on reeds, but Chris can probably answer that better than I. All I can say is that the set works very well.

Will answer this on a separate thread rather than clog up the ever increasing 'Ebay items' one. Full set of photographs including ones showing the reeds will go to the pictures of your pipes thread.

That may be worth checking with the man himself (as he's here). As far as I know Geoff hasn't made a bag for nearly 15 years. It may well be a Jackie Boyce bag to Geoff's specification that seller got from Geoff.

Actually I'll post the frankenset worldwide.

For the benefit of you lot, it's OK, it's a perfectly functional set which I hope to see sell for a bit less than half the price of a new set. But them drones are still fundamentally 1982 Lada. They'll play a steady note but they ain't a thing of beauty.
