Hatao - the Japanese flute player has put some vids of a trio he plays in up. The place they played in is very sonically active - definitely sonically active, Ken Matsusaka is definitely playing organ pipes

Hey Uillam, I didn't think Jarlath was playing"that" fast, personally I often play considerably faster than this. There is nothing wrong with showing off, when you get on stage at a festival, you are expected to show off, it's what you are being paid for! As for age and experience being better in some way than the exuberance of youth I am not entirely sure about that. I am edging 40 myself and show no signs of what you consider musical maturity. Older and slower doesn't necessarily mean wiser and more musical.
If you want to hear fast (which I'm sure you don't)

check out my version of Madame Bonaparte (www.brendanring/myspace.com), totally inspired by the version Finbar Furey recorded in his early twenties when I think he was at his best. And talking of Finbar lets not forget his famous reply on being asked why he played so fast " because I can!". I think Jarlath has it quite right. All musicians who play fast can play slow, the reverse isn't necessarily true

Subtle variation is an art that I am slowly working on. It's so much easier to be an acrobat and bob all around the place, jumping up and down on Hard D's etc; much harder to make it subtle and refined and at times barely noticeable. Pat Mitchell's descriptions of some of Willie Clancy's variations is a good place to start.

Personally, I think that if you can do it well then there's no harm in pulling out the stops once in a while. However, if you can't do it well, then it's best leave it alone.

Incidently, listening to Jarlath cut loose like that reminds me of Paddy Keenan's playing on his self-titled first album. The variations in Paddy's playing really push the limits, going so far as playing the melody on the regs. Wasn't Paddy in his early 20's when he recorded that album?

Damn! I'm going to have to wait till I return to Australia next January before I can post more piping videos to my You Tube account...

The Indonesian Government has ordered ISPs here to block all access to You Tube because it is hosting a Dutch anti-muslim movie called 'Fitna'.

I was wondering why I can't see any of the videos posted here today.

Oh well. Gives me more time to practice and not be tempted to post any more premature and substandard playing.

Brendan...I didnae say that Jarlath was playing too fast!!In fact I don't think my post mentioned that word at all.
My reference to Finbar was because he himself said to me that his playing is better now than it ever was.His reference to the exuberance of youth I thought was valid.That is why I mentioned it.
His reference to "because I can" is well known and part of folk lore now but the comment he made to me is less well known and I try to impart that pearl of wisdom on.
I agree their isnae much wrang with displaying yer skills and fair play to Jarlath and yersel ye are both blessed with that.
My point, if there was one at all, is that if it detracts frae the melody and no longer is part of or recognisable to the original then what is the point?

Your last observation is a bit debateable in my book.There is no advantage in playing too fast other than to say "because I can"...listen to some of the players today who play jigs way to fast and reels way to slow or super fast.Why?, they obviously think thats the way to play them because thats what they have heard.Once that is embedded in the culture we move away frae traditional music into something else.I do not wish to get into an argument re:tradition v modernism.That is for another day..
But I think I can make the comment that if'n ye are gonna play traditional music then at least play it traditionaly.
Put it this way...I have a car that can go at twice the speed of the road speed limit...but the rules say that I can only drive safely at half that amount.So in order to protect all and sundry frae fatalites I stick to the rules.
Same way wi the traditional Music ...there are certain rules re tempo(speed) If I exceed the tempo or start wobbling too much wi the melody(variation) then ye will run the danger of crashing the Tradition...
