Mikie Smyth

Post by Evertjan 't Hart »

Mikie Smyth was the guest piper during the Belgian Tionol this year.
I've put some sound clips and an AVI of his recital on the Dutch Uilleann Pipers Club website. If you're looking for regulator inspiration check them out. http://www.nvup.nl

All the best,
Evertjan

Tell us something.: I used to play pipes about 20 years ago and suddenly abducted by aliens.

I remember being in the piping class at the 1994 Fleadh Ceol in Clonmel with Mikie Smyth. He must have been only 10 or 11 years old at the time, but he was a real character. He enjoyed making f*rt noises with his bellows, but he was an explosive little player back then. It is great to see how he has matured.

I was the oldest in the class and was easily out-played by the kids. The names of the kids in the class that I remember, such as Flaithrí Neff and Mikie, have all gone on to become top pipers.

Ah, thanks Evertjan. Love it! I like the excellent rendition of the Wild Geese on the last clip. Amazing! Anyone know the 2nd jig in the first clip... I couldn't make out the name of it... MY Darling(-something-or-other)? Great tune!! Makes an airhead want to play jigs!!

He plays on "A New Dawn" available from NPU. It doesn't do him justice though.
