Polymide Thread
I have recently started trying to make a reed for my chanter, although with not too much success at the moment. One thing that bothers me is, that tying on the reedhead to the staple takes an extremely long time. I use dental floss for this and it is really fine. So I searched for alternatives and found, that in a lot of videos at the pipes club website waxed poly(a)mid thread is used. I searched all over the web for a supplier and could not find one. Sadly I can not buy anything from NPU because they only accept credit card as payment (at least this was the case last time I asked and I don't really want to get a credit card especially for that). This is really a frustrating issue, last time I needed about an hour to tie on a reed to destroy it afterwards and throw it away. I would much like to be able to destroy more cane at a faster rate. So could you help me with this? I am looking for a supplier for this thread or maybe an idea what to use as an alternative.

Hi Fergus,
Have you used the Rogge thread?
Is it flat in section or round?
Looking for a source of the flat stuff.
Cheers

I think it is the same stuff the NPU and Cillian Ó Briain use.Have you used the Rogge thread?

Bill Haneman uses some similar stuff to Polymide Thread. He used it at a reedmaking class I was at.
Cheers

I really hesitate to try to correct all you knowledgeable piper chaps ... but isn't it "polyamide thread"? Or is that something different?

Re: Polymide Thread
Thanks everyone! I think buying the thread from Andreas Rogge would be the best option, although this would probably be enough for several hundred years.

Re: Polymide Thread
Have you tried dental TAPE? That's what Benedict Koehler uses, coated with cobbler's wax. Is dental tape available in Germany?Tilori wrote:I use dental floss for this and it is really fine.

Re: Polymide Thread
Yes, Zahnband is available in Germany but what you can buy in a normal store is limited to the flavoured variants. In fact, I bought some dental tape on ebay. It was very wide and tying on went pretty fast, but the binding became loose every time. Because of the thinness of the floss the layers went over each other and there was no way for me to prevent this. So I have gone back to dental floss.

Re: Polymide Thread
I'm not sure what you mean by "the layers went over each other". They should overlap. And the addition of the cobbler's wax to the dental tape is what makes it sticky enough not to move around.Tilori wrote:Yes, Zahnband is available in Germany but what you can buy in a normal store is limited to the flavoured variants.
