Maybe OT: Fernando's Hideaway

Post by thewesleyan »

Does anyone know the tune "Fernando's Hideaway"? I haven't been able to find the music or abc for it.

Thanks in anticipation.

I know the tune. Try Hernando's Hideaway (with an 'H').

This is probably not what you are looking for, but the one by that name that I know is from the Broadway Musical, and subsequent movie release, "The Pajama Game."

I have seen reference to it with the first word starting with both F and H.

If this indeed is what your looking for, I would imagine you could find in in a song book of show tunes somehwere.

If this isn't the song you are looking for, feel free to tell me I'm wrong- everyone else does.

All the Best,

Tom

The one I know is from The Pajama Game. It's a tango, I think.

That's what I seem to remember also.

Wow! The title of this thread took me back 25 years in a flash! I know absolutely nothing of the tune (sorry), but I DO know Fernando's Hideaway. Or rather, did know it--sadly, it's gone now. North of San Diego, on the outskirts of Escondido, there was a very pretty reservoir in a little valley. And in a grove of eucalyptus trees on the edge of the reservoir in this rather secluded valley was a Mexican restaurant - Fernando's Hideaway. Very quiet and off the beaten path. I lived in San Diego twice - for a total of about seven years - and, believe me, there is some astonishingly good Mexican food to be found there, but Fernando's Hideaway was the epitome of fabulous Mexican food. Wonderful, quiet service. Great Mexican beer. My mouth still waters thinking about their chicken enchiladas...

And isn't it nice that somebody wrote a tune about it! ;)

Thanks one and all. If it's from a show, chances are the music shop will have it, so I'll go and look. I was expecting it to be some kind of Latin dance music, but had no idea of its age etc. And I'll try my searches with an 'H' too.
Thanks agin.

Pajama Game was a Broadway hit in the mid-1950s. Hernando's Hideaway was one of the most popular tunes from the show. (I was a teenager then, which is why I remember it.)

I know a dark secluded place
A place where no one knows your face
A glass of wine, a fast embrace
It's called 'Hernando's Hideaway.'

All you see are cigarettes
And all you hear are castenets
And no one cares how late it gets,
It's called Hernando's Hideaway.

At the Golden Fingerbowl or anyplace you go
You'll meet your Uncle Max and everyone you know
But if you go to the spot that I am thinking of
You will be free
To gaze at me
And talk of love...

Just knock three times and whisper low
That you and I were sent by Joe
Then strike a match and you will know
You're in Hernando's Hideaway.

Best
