Roscommon Reel

Post by Whistlin'Dixie »

Question for Monday ~ Anybody know any history behind this swinging reel?

Also, any suggestions for a tune to follow it?

It's followed by The Sweet Flowers of Miltown on WFO, which makes for a very nice set I think. I have the latter almost under the fingers, working on the former!

It's also called Crowley's there's a great version on Desi Wilkinson's 3 piece flute CD. Here's what the session says:

Most transcriptions I've seen have a G in the first bar, but I learned it as a G sharp and have often heard it played that way (especially by fiddlers). I prefer the G sharp, it gives the tune an interesting twist and it sounds "older" somehow.
