My first thoughts are this.....this whistle is NOT easy to play compared to my Blackbird and my tweaked Gens either brass or nickel. However, the whistle sounds great and sounds close to my blackbird but more like a Gen whistle. The other difficult to play whistle i have that is from Jerry Freeman was purchased three years ago . It is called a Freeman GenDog in nickel w/blue Gen head. This whistle as well as the Bluebird has a lot of back-pressure! Neither of these whistles have had the putty trick done to them! I found this to be very interesting in the fact that I'm NOW used to a whistle with no back-pressure! The blackbird is a piece of cake to play for me now and this bluebird is difficult for me as of today! Very good sounding whistle and nowhere on the label does it say Bluebird! Hmmm? This is my 11th Freeman whistle.
Odd. They must have changed considerably over the years since I acquired mine quite a long time ago. I can't imagine any Freeman whistle having strong backpressure, and my Bluebird is extremely easy to play, and the best of any Freeman whistle I've played in my opinion. It also has the putty.
All of his whistles are nice, but the Bluebird is the only one I really got on very well with (I've not tried the tweaked Gens, aside from the Bb, which wasn't my thing). Can't imagine one playing as you describe. Mine is a sweet whistle that takes a blow pretty similar to most other whistles of this type, though slightly less sensitive than the blackbird.
Maybe you should write to Jerry about it. Is it possible it was damaged in some way, or has something clogging it?
