Lots of interesting Shaker stuff in this area. I think the place Mike mentioned is the Shaker Village, which includes a fascinating round barn, gardens, dwelling houses, etc. A very beautiful , interesting place. BTW-- one of the Village's ads describes the Shakers as "No Sex, No Drugs, No Rock and Roll"...
Right in New Lebanon is the Theatre Barn, which has some very good summer stock productions-- not sure when their season starts. In Chatham, NY is the Mac Hayden theatre. Over the mountains and up North a bit in Williamstown is the Williamstown Theatre which is one of the best summer theatre festivals in the country. The Clarke Art Institute , also in W'town is a fantastic art museum with a truly astonding collection of paintings and sculpture by old masters, impressionists, etc. Not as huge as the Met, but you will be very impressed. Great place.
Tons of hiking, etc. You can head over to Jiminy Peak ski area, pick a ski trail, and start climbing. They also have an alpine slide. Be aware that deer ticks and the associated Lyme Disease have been found in the area, so take appropriate measures ( but don't let that keep you off the trails!)
