Re: who can give a Chinese band,a meaningful name of Ireland
Nanohedron: There's also czech bands with irish name.
Actually, I don't think that "altán" is really czech word (it is probably "adopted" word). Nearest similar word is old-german(?) word "altan" which should be from italian "altana" which should be "balcony" (and/or probably "gazebo" too).

"Síne" is Irish Gaelic for "China". Nice and simple?

These days one sort of expects that. The other way around, not so much. That's what I'm getting at.kmarty wrote:Nanohedron: There's also czech bands with irish name.
Interesting! I did some looking around, and it's definitely a name in Turkic and Mongolic languages, meaning "dawn" and "golden", respectively. But, nothing remotely gazebo-ish about those.kmarty wrote:Actually, I don't think that "altán" is really czech word (it is probably "adopted" word). Easily pronounceable, too.Brus wrote:"Síne" is Irish Gaelic for "China". Nice and simple?

It seems that typical italian "altana" is on the roof of building:Nanohedron wrote:Interesting! ... But, nothing remotely gazebo-ish about those.
Ok, let it be.
"Síne" looks good. How it is pronounced?

Ah, what in English we would call a cupola. Also derived from the Italian...

Oh no, that's not the same. You mean "kupole" (type of roof) which is not what I'm talking about.Nanohedron wrote:Ah, what in English we would call a cupola. Also derived from the Italian...
I'm talking for something what is without own roof just a (small) terrace.
But as I said, let it be. Back to name of Chinese band

It would be "Shee-neh", roughly like the name Sheena.kmarty wrote:"Síne" looks good. How it is pronounced?

No, that is NOT what I meant. I said, "in English", remember? Here you go:kmarty wrote:Oh no, that's not the same. You mean "kupole" (type of roof)...Nanohedron wrote:Ah, what in English we would call a cupola. Also derived from the Italian...

Definition 1b. The definition - in English usage - has broadened to include and (at least in American English) be predominantly defined in the vernacular by rectilinear finial-like rooftop structures such as this:
Quite a far cry from the original meaning, to be sure, but there you have it. Trust me, I know my own language pretty well.

Maybe there's a cupola different definitions. Or a cupola different things called by the same name.

This doesn't meet your requirement of one word but I think it's a fun name.

Re: who can give a Chinese band,a meaningful name of Ireland
I would not doubt about your english. I just realized that we both talking from beginning about different things, so I wanted to stop it (twice). Although this sound interresting, it is too much off topic here (at first, we have to find the same "object" until we start to find its name and origin, right? But not here).Nanohedron wrote:Trust me, I know my own language pretty well.
