Re: Posting clips

Post by Henke »

I sat down a while today at my mothers place and recorded a few new clips. They're certainly not perfect, I seldom have the patience to record more than one or two takes and I'm not at the level where I'm consistent enough to nail it every time. I feel that I still have a problem keeping to the beat when playing without accompaniment. But anyway, tell me what you think folks.
And oh, don't mind the tuning on the F&P. I'm working on that with certain flute maker (If he can be bothered to reply to my e-mails a little more regularly).

Maid Behind the Bar / Fredd Finn's (F&P flute)

Larry the Beerdrinker (F&P flute)

Lad O'Beirne's (F&P flute)

Rolling on the Rye Grass (F&P flute)

Munster Grass / Eamonn McGivne's (F&P flute) - I just learned these tunes from the playing of Josh Dukes and June McCormack so I haven't worked on them much yet, but I like them so much I decided to upload them anyway-

O'Mahoney's Reel (F&P flute)

Garrett Barry's Jig (F&P flute)

Same as above on a Bell Bb flute (Old clip)

The Gneevgullia Reel (M&E Rudall)

Palmers Gate (Seery Pratten)

Maybe I'd be playing more in time if had drunk a little
whisky :really:

Henke, thanks for posting those clips, i enjoyed listening to them.
Many times you go way too fast (and loose the rhythm), you should slow down a bit. Try to play along with a metronome, or use your foot. :)

Yes I agree there are some timing slips in places, but you were aware of these i think. Some of the other tunes don't seem to suffer in the same way. The maid behind the bar for example, though there is a slight timing glitch at the start of the second tune. Your tone is good. Nice approach. Well executed ornaments. I also liked your hornpipes and again I thought the rhythm and timing was good here. More power (Powers ?) to you.

Thanks guys! Yeah I'm aware of the rythm slippage, that's always been my weak point. I'm fine when I play accompanied by my ultra steady friends on guitar and bodhran, so I'm thinking I have to play more with them and maybe I'll eventually learn to keep to the beat. Playing along with a metronome doesn't work very well for me.

Arbo, very well executed. I like the crispness of your tone very much. What flute are you using?

whisky :)

Well played lads, sorry I have posted in a while, I'm listening to the 'Pride of the West' CD, I have to say the playing on that CD is amazing, so I'm trying to get a few of the sets off.

Ok, it passed about a year from the last time i posted a clip... i know i'm a lazy lad :D
Today is not a very good day for my tone, it's a bit unfocused and not very edgy, but anyway here's a take of the reel "the jolly tinker", played on a Seery flute (not mine, i'm waiting for a keyed Lehart and a friend lent me this one, since i sold my Copley). There are a few issues here and there, and i should probably slow down a bit, but you get the idea: http://www.box.net/shared/ftg11ymbh2

Hey Lorenzo,

Yes, I would agree....slow down. I liked your phrasing, though I felt like you may have been running out of breath somewhat in parts. Overall, I think your rhythm was fairly steady. Nice pulse. I would like to hear you play it again slower.
Thanks for posting. This is a tune that has been on radar for a while now. Perhaps I will give it a go.

Lorenzo,

Overall I thought very well played.

There is a bit of running out of air, but I don't think it's upset your timing too much. I'd say might be slight speeding and slowing of the tempo in places but otherwise the timing is fine. I can tap my foot along fine.

IMHO you are handling the speed ok. It might be more a style thing. I think you're playing a style that I wouldn’t feel able to comment on much.It has good drive and lift I think. I basically agree with Arbo's comments but having read them before listening your playing is better than the comments lead me to expect, not meaning anything against, or that anything is wrong with Arbo's comments, I just wanted to show the other side of the same coin.

How about some more?

Do you get much Irish music in Italy? My Brother in law is Italian.

It is slightly, I think. If you could have got a better focus on it I think it could have lifted this a lot. Some of your phrasing could be made to stand out very nicely.

I woke up this morning and had this set of tunes running through my head. I would be happy if some one could ID the second reel. The first one is Elsie Brogan's, and the last is the Pigtown Fling.
