Last weekend, I had the honour of playing at the Irish memorial on Grosse-Île, a quarantine station in the St Lawrence, and the final resting place of 5,600 Irish and Scottish immigrants who died from a typhus epidemic in 1847.

A local journalist, Eric Bernard, prepared the following report:

The names on the glass are those that were buried on Grosse Ile in 1847.

The Celtic Cross on the island has an inscription on 3 of the sides, in French, English and Irish. The French and English are more or less the same - dedicating the cross to those who died on the island in 1847. However, the Irish inscription is a little more to the point. It says something along the lines of "Dedicated to the sons and daughters of the Gael who died fleeing tyranny and a false famine in 1847".

There's a huge amount of history on that island and in the surrounding area. Many Irish children were orphaned on the island and were adopted by French Canadian families in the neighbouring region. A curious feature is that they kept their Irish family names but otherwise assimilated to the French Canadian culture. These days, there are lots of O'Briens, Noonans, Kavanaghs, etc. but the only speak French!!

The pizza box sounds a lot better than many fancy "genuine Irish" bodhráns out there.
The player too.
