Call it "Irish" if you like, or a folk flute. Perhaps a tapered bore folk flute, to distinguish such flutes from cylindrical bamboo or modern PVC flutes etc.
 ack

so ya take an English 8-key flute
strip all the keys off (an' hock 'em fer a pint?)
plug the naked holes so's they don't leak

an' then ya call it Irish?
:poke:
I've heard the argument go that way.

But the keyless tapered-bore beast as we know it for ITM is a modern invention. I hear tell there are some players who regard keys as a wimp's gambit. This is nonsense. Keys are for keeping your flute from rolling off the table. Everyone knows that. :D

Folks will keep answering your question long after you quit reading. But that's OK. That's just how helpful we are.

And do not consider me an expert on any of this. I had no formal instructions with any of the instruments that I play, I play non-ITM music with non-wind instrument musicians, and I have very little knowledge of the technical language or the slang terms folks use around here. But there is a lot to learn around here. And when folks start getting all technical, I remember why I had no intention of studying music. All that stuff would have sucked the fun out of it for me. That's my two cents.

I've been asked if it was an oboe of some kittywompus sort, too. That I was actually pleased about because the question was prompted by the tone I was producing. I'll take thrown vegetables as compliments if it works.

Well I do prefer oboe to clarinet.

Still we're talkin' someone with very little knowledge of woodwinds.

On the other hand they aren't tone deaf! (long as the veggies are reasonably fresh)

Not that there is anything wrong with being tone deaf.....

Have I ever mentioned that my sister is tone deaf?
I'm sure that Ma would never have stuck her with a
cello if she'd any idea.....painful....good thing Ma was
into the tenor range of instruments though!

Lots of kids get proclaimed tone deaf but aren't, which can ruin their love of music for life.

Teachers can be so insensible, in fact music teachers can act insensible because they are too sensible and want their pupil to shut up. They should not be teachers.

Far be it from me to serve ill regard upon those truly so afflicted. I admit I do use the term more loosely, and not in a neutral fashion, for those with tone discernment but nevertheless persistently dodgy listening habits.* If you find that inappropriate, please let me know, and I'll come up with something else. :)

*BTW, this is most emphatically NOT in teaching-type situations. No, sir.

She is oblivious to pitch change, not a good thing on a non fretted instrument. It had nothing to do with listening habits.

It was just painful the year she decided to practice. It didn't last. I left. It's all good now!

Of course.

Instead I was referring to those who, unlike your sister, are indeed in a position to do better but don't, or won't, for whatever reason, and it's habitual although with a bit of work they should be able to be trained or train themselves to sharpen their hearing/listening skills. From there, it comes down to caring about being better than just sort of approximately in tune, doesn't it. BTW, experience tells me that caring about it probably can't be taught.

I am actually human, believe it or not, and make a distinction in this.
