Importing Ivory and Ivory products into Australia

Post by ausdag »

Given that many older sets of pipes are mounted in Ivory I was wondering what the Australian law stipulates concerning the importation of Ivory and Ivory products. I found the following information at -

http://www.deh.gov.au/biodiversity/publ ... tml#import

.....

Can I import Elephant products?
Only Elephant products that were taken from an animal before 1975 (for Indian Elephants) or 1977 (for African Elephants) may be imported into Australia. These items are referred to as 'pre-CITES' items and are allowed to be traded as they were obtained from Elephants prior to the CITES controls taking effect.

Examples of Elephant products include carved ivory figurines, carved and uncarved tusks, wallets, bags, furniture and other items made from skin, hair bracelets and bagpipes with ivory tips.

To import such items you will have to obtain a pre-CITES Certificate issued by the country of export. On arrival in Australia you must declare the items to the Australian Customs Service and present the pre-CITES Certificate.
........

So there ya go.
