A look inside the Wilkes flute workshop

A very impressive (and expensive) bit of tooling in Mr. Wilkes' shop: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl= ... f%26sa%3DG

What's that in photo 3? If I didn't know better, I'd say it's an optical comparator. It definitely looks like a metrology tool to me.

How much action do you think the treadle lathe gets?

I had to ask Jack the same thing, I didn't have a clue, but you are apparently correct Charlie.

THANKS LOREN!!

I look at all this equipment with lust in my heart and dream of what I could make with such apperatus!

Then I see the pictures on the bulletin board in pic. 6 and don't feel so bad!

They are pictures of construction of wooden canoes and paddles. I've got enough wood and fiberglass in the basement to make 6 kayaks. Now all I need is the time. :boggle:

Very clean, isn't it. And not a bit of flute anywhere to be seen! :o

Well, one wouldn't expect to see the machines and floor at Powell covered with sawdust and metal chips at the end of the day either, would one?

Chris' workshop was unnaturally clean when I visited in 2002. Maybe he has a shed out the back where he does all the work!

It's a while since I tried the Google "Search Images" function - it's very good isn't it! I just tried it, searching on just "mcgee flute" and was reminded of heaps of stuff on my own site I hadn't visited in years! And some stuff from other people's sites I wasn't aware of.

Probably good to try all sorts of combinations with "flute" to see what else turns up!

Hello.
Loren is wondering if the photos of Chrises workshop hosted by Graham
Farr were not for
public inspection.
You might assure him that all is well.
I had asked Graham to host them with a view to making them available
to the Chiffers as soon as Chris had
written captions, but I was " moderated " before I could.

Thanks for that, Jon and Andrew.

I'm of the (educated) opinion that Mr. Wilkes is the most technically proficient maker/restorer currently out there, and as such, I was quite interested to see a bit of his workshop, which I just happened to stumble upon. I was sorry to see the link blocked, but I'll be happy to go visit in person and take additional photos if necessary  Wouldn't mind learning a thing or two in the process......
