Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I've had another look - I couldn't see that with the rings, but it's not easy to see. OTOH, the silver embouchure insert looks ever so similar to one I've seen which was on a replacement HJ made by Chris Wilkes.

I've seen original Rudalls with wide rings. Brian Berryman from Braunschweig plays one.

If anyone can find a reconding of the lady performing on her antique flute it would be really great.
Btw, who made her flute? Can you see any feature more likely to be found on a partucular brand/maker?
She is one of the most prominent and most recorded period instrument specialists, but I dunno about on that particular flute. You should be able to find discographies for her online, but they won't indicate what toots she uses!
Flute looks Rudally to me - nothing about it seems incongruous. Does David Migoya know owt? Certainly the lip-plate isn't any kind of disqualifier or indicator of non-original-ness. (Why do we keep getting asked that/having it suggested???? Cocus allergy, just preferring the metal, etc. are nothing new. Plenty of period flutes with lip-plates, embouchure bushings, etc. etc.) Anyway, I rather doubt the marvellous LB would play other than a fully original instrument unless she had no choice - an unlikely scenario. Doesn't she get a grand sound off it, and have great facility with the keywork?!!!!!

That's a really fabulous series of videos from the OAE - fully intend to view them all properly in due course - thanks for posting the link! Great discovery.

But is it normal that it only has one single wide ring, the rest being normal sized?

Since it was me that suggested it ... it wasn't the lip plate itself, and I had already suggested in my previous post that I couldn't see why it wouldn't be original. The only thing that I could see that might suggest otherwise, I thought, was the precise shape of the lip plate, which I, in my limited experience, have only seen on a Wilkes hj. We could always ask Chris where he got that design from, I suppose, and see if he copied it from a Rudall original. Although I did ask him once, and he implied (you know him - can't quite pin him down) that it was a shape he'd devised himself. But again, knowing Chris, that could just mean that it's a tenth of a millimetre different in one or other dimension from a previously existing design. Or not ...

That is exactly the case on Brian's Rudall. One barrel ring wide, rest normal.
