D Regulator Reed Dimensions

Post by misterpatrick »

Hello all,

I have a 3/4 set and I'd like to try making some cane regulator reeds. I haven't been able to find many dimensions on the forum, so this might be a good opportunity to gather some data. I'll be getting some numbers from my maker (pipe that is), but it'd be great to hear some different options. I'd like to try using tubular staples under the most-likely erroneous assumption that it will be a bit easier.

Who made your regs?
Are they standard or narrow bore? What are they derived from?
If you've got reeds in them already have you measured them?

If you're maker gives you the reed sizes then stick with those.

Tubular staples should be fine.

Copied from an older post on here some time ago ( can't be bothered to search for it now, so apologies to the original poster!)

Tenor - 5/32 tube 50mm long staple, cane ~11-11.5mm wide, 20mm tail, 26-28mm head
Bari - 3/16 tube 52mm long staple, cane ~12-12.5mm, 28mm tail, 28mm head
Bass - 3/16 tube 55mm long staple, cane 13mm wide, 28mm tail, 28-30mm head

Hope these help to start you off.

The Uilleann Pipe Reedmaker's Guidance Manual by Dave Hegarty has regulator dimensions in this book.

Dimension from Allan Moller's reedmaking video for a Johnny Bourke set of regs.

Baritone

All the best

I got some dimensions from Tim Benson who made my D set. The reeds in there now are spruce which is why I couldn't measure them myself.

Tenor:
slip width: .410 - .420" (.413" is a good place to start)
staple ID: .118 or nominal size closest
staple length: 1.850"
staple insertion: .750" - .8125"
tails cut at 1.125"
staple relief excavated at 1" or so
sanding cylinder: 1.6875" - 2"
dip: .025
stature: .080"
cane tube diameter: .750 - .8125

Baritone:
slip width: .453"
staple ID: .118 or nominal size closest
staple length: 1.850"
staple insertion: .850" - .875"
tails cut at 1.125"
staple relief at 1" or so
sanding cylinder: 2"
dip: .025
stature: .080"
cane tube diameter: .750 - .8125

No bass as I don't have one. It would be great if other people posted some dimensions and perhaps some tips of making regulator reeds here (bronze, plastic, cane) to benefit those searching for info on the board.

And here's a request. I have a small bag of cane tubes, but they are all chanter diameter (between .875 and .950 or so), does anyone a few tubes of the smaller diameter stuff they'd sell me?
