The traditional music of Spongebob Squarepants

Post by SkipJack »

I say it proudly and without the slightest shame. I LOVE Spongebob Squarepants. It is one of the few true delights in this world. And with all the terrific traditional music in the show my greatest goal as a tin whistler has been to learn the various polkas and hornpipes from the show. Big problem, though. I had no idea what most of the songs were or how to find full recordings of them until now! I'm still working on identifying half of them so I thought I might draw from the sea of knowledge here.

Identified Songs:
Drunken Sailor - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZqDLlbVfeA
Dingle Regatta - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QtQmzw0HCU
The Keel Row - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_Ie2w5NRRk
The Tip Top / Cliff Polka - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cARXjGO_-lM
The Achterhoek Dances (Dutch) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UQajWbiGeQ
Horlepiep (Dutch) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtDHxzWK ... re=related

Unidentified Songs:
Boys and girls? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jQNg979JBI
Rake Hornpipe? New song? It only seems to be connected with Spongebob - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0c75bbRNmY

Awesome! I'm glad your mate approves. I'd be practicing for my own Spongebob session if 20-something ITM musicians were more common in my corner of New England. Maybe I'll hop the pond and join you in Leeds.

Tell us something.: I've been making whistles since 2010 in my tiny workshop at my home. I've been playing whistle since teenage times.

Spongebob is my hero and taught me everything I know about trad music and life. He is a tremendous nose-flute player. I even composed a tune in his honor called "Spongebob's reel" which, if I ever remember it, I may record someday.
