Dominic Allan flutes?

Post by LorenzoFlute »

Some of you might remember that I'm looking for a good and cheap keyed pratten-style flute, possibly in Europe. In my search i found flute maker Dominic Allan, his 8 keyed flutes cost only £1350!
Any info (on his pratten-style only)? Please contact me either here or by PM... Thanks!

Cotters are a bit expensive, I'd like to pay no more than 1500 euros for 5 keys...

I thought they were a good deal and not a long waiting list, but I haven't had any recent info.
Are you sure? Meanwhile we just had a strong endorsement of the Ormiston pratten.

I didn't contact mr. Cotter, but reading around i found that the price for a six keyed flute is around 2100 euros.
Anyway, before buying any flute from any maker i prefer considering all the options, and if Dominic Allan's pratten flutes are good they would be a great deal, given the price..

Hello.... I have an Allen 8 key that I bought from him about 5 years or so ago.... not a Pratten style though, and I've found it to be a good sounding flute with solid key work. I'd recommend his work, I think it's a great value.

Othannen,

I only just spotted this post.

I play a Dominic Allan keyless D, but have spent a good deal of time playing a couple of his keyed flutes.

I think they are outstandingly good and exceptionally priced.

In fact, I think so much of his flutes, that I arrange with him from time to time to take samples with me to sessions and what not so other people can play them and hopefully get in touch with him (please note I get absolutely NOTHING out of this myself other than the satisfaction of promoting a true craftsman's products).

Please get in touch with him - he's more than happy to work with you on design, style, and specifications.

Send me a PM if you need contact details.

Questions, if I may. How's his Pratten? How does it compare to other Prattens?
(How does lemon wood compare to blackwood?)
Thanks.

...and then his 'Series R' - what he calls a 'warts and all copy' of an 1830 R&R - is £1,650 (with block mounts and sterling silver keys). I haven't played one though.

Yes it is him, I asked him to post the clip. Hard to tell the actual quality of the flute if he didn't keep his lips trained though...
