Re: "He's your son!!" of APOD
Apologies if I am missing something here or if it appears I am pissing on someone's chips, as nice as the pictures are I don't really see the relevance of them on this forum. Can someone enlighten me or am I the only one who isn't included in this cult?

Sure, Stu. A very dear friend of this board, Denny Ray, passed away last year, rather suddenly. As an astronomy fan, Denny would post a daily APOD link for our amusement, discussion, and general silliness. It was part of Denny's unique, signature personality.accordionstu wrote:Apologies if I am missing something here or if it appears I am pissing on someone's chips, as nice as the pictures are I don't really see the relevance of them on this forum. After his passing, Dave decided to continue this little tradition, for which we're very appreciative (thanks, Dave!). This thread is a living memorial to our friend, and a daily reminder that there's a big cosmos out there beyond our daily concerns.
I half expect Denny to show up in one of the Hubble photos someday, holding up a sign reading: "Impressive out here, innit?"

I don't understand why the question was even asked. With the number of viewings its quite obvious that people are interested in the thread and images, moreover, the bigger picture.
And BTW, its a hello to Denny from here. Daily too! Also, my cornflakes are dry.

Re: "He's your son!!" of APOD
Thanks MTGuru for the heads up and apologies anyone who thought my question ignorant. A fitting tribute and great to see that past members are still in your thoughts. I suppose this is where i say something witty about stars and space but nothing comes to mind except a dirty joke which includes a black hole, probably not the right moment fir it though.
Thanks also for your response Ytliek, however there is nothing obvious about it, one thread one poster, i can't believe Iam the only person ever to raise a query about it. But now I am informed.

I was recently telling someone about this very tradition. Just one of the little things that makes this corner of the Internet a community.
And I am a bit of an astronomy geek anyway.

"APOD" does make me think of some creepy animal without any feet.

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Re: "He's your son!!" of APOD
I never met Denny, and I don't recall ever exchanging messages with him, but I grew up in Huntsville, Alabama in the U.S., where a great bulk of the work to get man to the moon was done, and hearing Saturn V main engine tests were a regular occurrence. My father worked for NASA from the time he finished university until the day he died. I was able to meet Werner Von Braun when I was about seven or eight, along with several of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts. In my work life I have worked with several of the shuttle era astronauts, and the hall outside my office contained the shuttle external tank used during the static testing of the overall shuttle structure (it was a big hallway). So I guess continuing this thread is as much a tribute to my da, and my enthusiasm for everything "out there", as it is to Denny. So, now, without anymore acts of maudlin self-reflection.... (this means go on to the next post )
