VD, you obviously have the gift of hyperbole, but no one is really expecting this thing to be a gold-plated Olwell. I do, however, expect MUCH more from a flute with an asking price of $500, considering what else one can get for that wedge.
Everything else is just an elaboration of that point.

A reasonable argument. I, of course, speak from the perspective of one who paid considerably less for the flute.Rob Sharer wrote:VD, you obviously have the gift of hyperbole, but no one is really expecting this thing to be a gold-plated Olwell. I'd be careful. People with loose stools have been known to fall on their ash.

I would take it as a kindness if you would not refer to me by the above initials anymore.Rob Sharer wrote:VD, you obviously have the gift of hyperbole, but no one is really expecting this thing to be a gold-plated Olwell. I respect people's privilege to hold their beliefs, whatever those may be (within reason), but respect the beliefs themselves? You gotta be kidding!

Re: McCarty Unofficial Tour-Flute Review Thread
Perhaps Dr. Rob would prescribe the Edward II treatment?
Edited for stupid typo. Was sure I'd written "prescribed", not "described" - certainly meant to! I'm obviously suffering from all the bad PR round here.....

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Have you been storing that one up for two whole pages? Anyway, that would only be useful for the bore, wouldn't it?jemtheflute wrote:Perhaps Dr. Rob would describe the Edward II treatment?

Re: McCarty Unofficial Tour-Flute Review Thread
We seem to have gone off the rails here.
The McCarty flute seems to be of Pakistani origin - I agree with (I think it was David/Julia?) that said just because the man has a workshop, doesn't mean he made the flute, there or anywhere.
What does seem the most possible/probable to me is that he is tweaking Pakistani flutes into reasonable tuning in his said shop, refinishing them and calling them his own. Whether he's somehow burning the holes/embouchure or just trailing glue on them, I can't say. But the truth is that much better flutes are out there for the same cost or less.
So....
