- Tell us something.: i've been making flutes for over twenty years, playing with friends and neighbors who help me tune my instruments and encourage me to share my art with the world. I carve bamboo flutes using concentrated sunlight and 3D-print whistle mouthpieces down to 42" contrabasses, as well as one-handed double tabor pipes.

My 42" bass pipe is tuned to D major.
Edit: I'm 6' tall.

Can you post a picture of someone playing this? I'm having difficulty understanding the size (particularly because I don't have a flute on hand right now).Huhupat wrote: My 42" bass pipe is tuned to D major.
I've made a flute that was in G Major and the bottom note was the G below middle C. However, at that size, the 1st and the 4th hole had to be on the bottom side of the flute and covered with the thumb to be playable. So I am a little unsure when you say "Bass pipe" whether or not it is as large as I am thinking or as difficult to play as I am thinking.

Just found this old photo from the 1980s of the Rudall & Rose flute I played for many years.
Boxwood, ivory, silver.
It was made at their 1827-1837 address.

Richard it's good to see a photo of the boxwood R&R you owned. Looks like the C# and C pewter foot joint keys have bushed tone holes instead of square strike plates as the Eb pewter key has? The metal slide seems to be sheathed in boxwood or maybe it's the lighting?
